Parrots are wild animals, not pets. They should be treated as such. This site does not promote the breeding or keeping of parrots as pets. This information is provided for current guardians of parrots in order to enrich their lives and keep them in a forever home. The sites listed here comprise companies that do not sell birds.
Toys are an integral part of your bird's life in captivity. In the wild, parrots spend hours searching for food sources, nesting locations, eating and playing with flockmates. Their very nature tells us they are extremely intelligent. Anyone who has read Dr. Irene Pepperburg's research on African Grey's use of cognitive speech knows that. Ideally, birds should not be caged but should instead have a large flight or aviary in order to live as naturally as possible. Until you can get that aviary built, your bird should have as spacious a cage as possible (about four wingspans wide for most birds, larger for the smaller, high energy birds!) and this cage should be furnished with perches of differing widths and materials (rope, natural branches, concrete-type), a few different feeding stations, and, of course, toys! The cage should not be so overloaded with toys that your bird cannot move around comfortably, though. Three or four interesting toys should be in the cage, and these toys should be rotated frequently, maybe 3 times a month. There are a few different types of toys that should be available. Puzzle toys, shredding toys, chewing toys, and foot toys should be rotated often. Be sure that each toy is appropriate for your bird. Large parrots like macaws should not be given toys designed for cockatiels and small conures, for instance. Examine all toys initially for dangerous or loose parts, loose strings, or fabric that could form a loop and injure your bird, and small parts that could be broken off and swallowed by your bird. Examine all toys frequently and throw away those that are too worn to be safe. There are many websites that offer toys for sale- I probably could not fit them all on this page! I have not ordered toys from all of these sites and cannot vouch for their safety or quality. Toys and accessories from reputable manufacturers are usually considered to be safe. Toys from private dealers should have been tested for safety before resale.
