The Sad Reality

The following passage states how serious the problem of unwanted parrots has become.  From the article"Working With Second-Hand Parrots" by Pamela Clark from The Pet Bird Report

In February of 2000, The Gabriel Foundation held a convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, which focused solely on the problem of unwanted parrots.  Concerned individuals from all over the world and every area of aviculture attended, in hopes that the very beginnings of solutions could be discussed... During those days, the magnitude of this problem became abundantly clear.  Rescue facilities, adoption programs and sanctuaries in the United States are full and many have long waiting lists.  There is literally nowhere for these unwanted birds to go, and the situation is reaching such crisis proportions that is is generally agreed that within a year or two we will begin seeing large scale euthanasia of unwanted birds, as we do with cats and dogs.
"Coinciding with the Gabriel Foundation Symposium was the announcement by the Kaytee Company of its new program called Kaytee Preferred Birds.  This program has been operating on the East Coast for a year now, and Kaytee is proud of the fact that it sold 100,000 baby parrots from PetsMart stores during 1999.  This year, they have begun to work the West Coast, providing large numbers of baby parrots to PetsMart stores here, and hope to replicate those East Coast numbers.  This picture presents a painful comparison, when held up against the information presented at the Symposium 2000.
